The Expectations from 2021

The advent of New Year has been always synonymous to new changes , aspirations, hopes and expectations and with 2021 the expectations are far too high.

We were taught to make new year resolutions since primary schools and neither of us ever succeeded in accomplishing those resolutions (some dedicated students could last till last week of January). We were also taught that it is perfectly okay if resolutions failed, but its important to start afresh with high hopes. It has been over decades since I made my first resolution in the beginning of the millennium in 2000. Similar to 2000, the year 2020 was a dream year for many

From Novels on 2020, science-fiction inspired dreams and witnessing Tokyo Olympics were some of the dreams of people I know and many others must have had similar dreams and expectations. It took a microscopic pathogen to spoil the plans and expectations of almost every individual on this planet. And we now have expectations from 2021.

Today , (1st January 2021), I was driving past some places of worship, public parks, community centers all geared up in safety shield, N95 Masks and tight windows. Whereas the crowd at all these places was really different from what we would have expected in middle of April-May 2020. Some of these places had banners and balloons of welcoming 2021 in a special way as the year would provide the prevention as well as the cure for the pandemic.

It is in this enthusiasm of hope and expectations I was reminded of the Roman God Janos, in whose honour the month of January has been named. He has two faces , one towards the future and one towards the past. This enabled him to fore see the future as well as deeply analyze the past before reaching a result.

We transition from one decade to another, one era to another or from one year to another , we transit via the doors of January, so we could remind ourselves to not to overlook the past, learn from our mistakes and consciousness before having expectations from others to fulfill our incomplete dreams and resolutions.

Happy New Year 2021.

Happy Learning from 2020.

Stay Safe.
